We have trusted the Savio© name for many years in our waterfeatures, and we hope these products give you years of service and enjoyment of your watergarden. An excerpt of the press release includes this:
The segment features personnel from The National Wildlife Federation (NWF), Animal Planet, and Chic Kelty, founder of Savio Engineering and Freedom Islandscapes.
Chosen to participate in the segment because of the company’s unwavering commitment to quality products and eco-friendly water features, Kelty had nothing but praise for the experience, “Savio has always been a company with a higher calling. Yes, we strive to make the very best products, but that’s not enough. It is our hope that Savio will continue to be recognized as a manufacturer who cares about keeping our planet green.”
*****Last year NWF recognized Savio as the only water gardening manufacturer whose full line of products meet their stringent standards for eco-friendly installations. Homeowners who use Savio components or Freedom Islandscapes in their water features can have their backyards certified as a “National Wildlife Habitat” by the NWF.
“I’m most excited for our distribution network,” adds Kelty. “People who sell Savio products are the most dedicated and knowledgeable individuals in our industry. I hope this type of exposure will further advance their Savio business and give them a platform for promoting their passion for eco-friendly water gardening.”
Savio Engineering sponsors an Authorized Dealer program, which is free to the retailers. Their businesses are promoted within a “Where to Buy” zip code search on the Savio website. The company goal is to let consumers know which businesses they should support. Many other promotional events have been planned during the 2008 season so all qualified retailers are encouraged to contact Savio and take advantage of this opportunity.

These poor examples of waterfeatures are striking displays of unoriginality and haphazard installation that left the homeowner's expectations unfulfilled and disappointed. Carolina Pondscapes to the rescue! CLICK HERE to see our analysis.

Herons: The Great Winged Nemesis...
One of the most devastating predators to your fish pond will most likely be the heron. Herons will not trash the pond so much as they will quickly eat your inventory. These nuisance birds usually feed alone (not preferring other herons feeding at the same, small pond at the same time) but swallowing a large fish in one destructive gulp is what they do best.
A pond in your garden is attractive and provides an extra habitat for wildlife. A pond with gently sloping sides will be used by small birds for drinking and bathing, and may attract toads, frogs and newts, or even herons. If you keep ornamental fish in the pond, you may prefer not to receive visits from a heron.
Herons eat mostly fish but also take amphibians and small mammals, with small quantities of reptiles, insects, crustaceans, molluscs, worms and birds. Herons fish mostly at dawn and dusk so they are rarely noticed.
Young herons teach themselves to fish, and when they leave their nest in June and July, small garden ponds are attractive to them because they often provide easy fishing.
There are many ways that a garden pond can be made less attractive to herons, but remember that many of the ways of 'heron proofing' a pond will deny its use to other wildlife also. If you have/are likely to have a persistent heron problem, it might be preferable to forget about the fish and turn the pond into a thriving wildlife pond, where the heron would be a welcome component.
Reducing the likelihood of herons eating fish from a garden pond is most effective if taken into account when designing the pond.
Consider what makes a pond attractive to herons, and incorporate a range of features that would make it difficult for a heron to get to the fish.
Change you routines regularly and go down to the pond regularly. Nevertheless feed the fish at routine times when you are always there, so they grow to learn that every figure next to the pool is going to feed them.
Give them something to hide in or under.
If you catch a heron at it, shout and yell and try to frighten them as much as possible.
If you have a pool net, net it straight away, just so that it is immediately discouraged if it makes a return visit.
Also dont restock straight away especially if you havent got a net. Wait for the bird to strike it off its itinerary.
Think about trip wires or sensor devices. Fishing line wrapped round canes and running round the pool edge set about a foot from the ground is the first plan of defense then. Perhaps you could set up an armed guard with Super Squirters.
The least attractive pond and easiest to protect is the small, steep-sided ornamental variety with a good covering of lily pads harboring half a dozen goldfish in a small urban garden.
The most attractive to herons (and very difficult to protect) is a large, unenclosed pond with gently sloping earth banks, leaping with fish, on a river floodplain near a heronry.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions about herons and their control.
Customer questions about Algae....
Recently, many of our customers have expressed a concern on the String Algae problem in their ponds. With most new installations, they will need to go through a period of balancing out to reduce the amount of algae that accumulates. There are two types of algae in most water gardens, Suspended algae and Filamentous (string) algae. The suspended algae causes the green water, which appears like pea green soup. It consists of millions of microscopic algae floating throughout the water. The Filamentous type forms long and short hair-like strands. It attaches itself to the stones, liner and plants or any surface area it can find. To reduce both types of these algae problems, there are several solutions. (1) One way is to make sure that your aquatic plants covers at least 60% to 70% of the area of the pond. This will decrease the amount of sunlight that penetrates thru the water. The more plants you have, the better, since algae and the plants tend to compete against one another. Water lilies, water lettuce and water hyacinths are great plants for this. These plants shade the surface area which will starve the algae. If your pond is in full sun, then there is a good chance that you will have problems with algae. (2) An Ultra-Violet Light is another great option when in full sun. This will kill all of the "pea green soup" looking water, but unfortunately, not the string algae. It is very important that the pond becomes balanced, so the aquatic plants are critical if not using an UV light. (3) Barley bales have been used in water gardens to kill off the string algae problem. They do not kill the string algae, but are used initially as a preventative measure to control it. (4) Another last resort is to use Algae Fix, which is a chemical. Carolina Pondscapes does not like to use this as an alternative, but if necessary, why keep up with the headaches. We don’t like using chemicals in our ponds. Microbe Lift has shown somewhat promising results in controling string algae if used as part of the monthly maintenance on the pond. It keeps the beneficial bacteria to a level where it can fight off most of the harmful bacteria. If you're not on a Maintenance program with us, we recommend that you keep a bottle of Microbe Lift on hand as part of the simple, basic maintenance which needs to be performed every month. Please feel free to contact us and we can send you the Microbe Lift product at a very competitive price.
New Innovations
We at Carolina Pondscapes are on the cutting edge of water feature technology. We are abreast of all the new techniques, tools, supplies, and trends that relate to landscaping, and we use our many years of experience to pick thru the products that work and those that do not. We take pride in our water feature designs, and we refuse to follow the crowd when it comes to "cookie-cutter" installations and unproven recommendations. We refuse to cut corners in our work, and the quality shows. So-called "experts" hype new chemicals, techniques, and the simplicity of watergarden kits; we inform our customers of the best options, avoiding the prepackaged approach. Each water feature we build is unique to the individual for whom we install it.
Events and Seminars
Carolina Pondscapes has numerous seminars scheduled in the upcoming months. Check your local newspapers and this website for dates and times as they finalize.
We are analyzing sites for a retail establishment in the area, thus catering to the "do-it-yourself" customer. We are also looking into a joint venture business with a garden supply company. This promising venture should expand our reach and ability to provide additional services for the homeowner.
